چکیده

The perceptual importance of timbre variations was investigated in clarinet expressive music performance. Three basic transformations acting on timbre, rhythm and dynamics and four combinations of them were applied to solo clarinet recordings in order to remove or flatten some of the expressive variations of the performer. Twenty skilled musicians were asked to choose the interpretations they preferred in a pair comparison task. The rankings of the performances were strongly consistent and this, for two different musical excerpts coming from Bach and Mozart pieces. Multidimensional scaling showed that the most prominent factor used by listeners was linked to the timbre of the tones.

On the Relative Influence of even and odd harmonics in Clarinet Timbre

The work presented here is part of a larger project directed toward a better understanding of the influence of timbre variations upon musical expressiveness. To address such an issue, we have limited our study to the relationship between the physics and playing of the clarinet, and the generated timbre. This reduction of the problem is justified by the fact that the clarinet is a physically wel...

Timbre Variations as an Attribute of Naturalness in Clarinet Play

A digital clarinet played by a human and timed by a metronome was used to record two playing control parameters, the breath control and the reed displacement, for 20 repeated performances. The regular behaviour of the parameters was extracted by averaging and the fluctuation was quantified by the standard deviation. It was concluded that the movement of the parameters seem to follow rules. When...

Estudi de casos pel control de śıntesi d’instruments musicals virtuals mitjançant la veu cantada. Case studies for controlling virtual instruments synthesis using the singing voice

Parameters Ssynth Timbre dynamics Loudness Fundamental Frequency Protocol The goal of this experiment is to evaluate the voice timbre, in this case the ”vowel-space” for controlling a perceptual attribute of the sytnhesized sound (brightness). This task is a priori not intuitive for a singer, since it would tend to control the clarinet dynamics with the loudness, which relates to the actual aco...

Influence of pitch, loudness, and timbre on the perception of instrument dynamics.

The effect of variations in pitch, loudness, and timbre on the perception of the dynamics of isolated instrumental tones is investigated. A full factorial design was used in a listening experiment. The subjects were asked to indicate the perceived dynamics of each stimulus on a scale from pianissimo to fortissimo. Statistical analysis showed that for the instruments included (i.e., clarinet, fl...

Representation and classification of the timbre space of a single musical instrument

In order to map the spectral characteristics of the great variety of sounds a musical instrument may produce, different notes were performed and sampled in several intensity levels across the whole extension of a clarinet. Amplitude and frequency time-varying curves of partials were measured by Discrete Fourier Transform. A limited set of orthogonal spectral bases was derived by Principal Compo...
